Springer partners with the Fields Institute to publish two open access journals

Journals on mathematics education and industrial mathematics join SpringerOpen

London | Heidelberg, 8 July 2015

SpringerOpen is now co-publishing two journals from the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences: Mathematics-in-Industry Case Studies and Fields Mathematics Education Journal. Both open access journals’ article-processing charges are covered by the Fields Institute, thereby removing all barriers to reading and publication.

The Fields Institute is an international center for research and training in all areas of the mathematical sciences and their applications. It is located on the University of Toronto campus. Until this year both journals were published by the Fields Institute and articles were hosted on their website. It was decided that the journals would be published by SpringerOpen to increase their visibility and potential audience.

Established in 2008, Mathematics-in-Industry Case Studies aims to meet the publication needs of the mathematics community, which works on problems that are important to industry. Its central theme is the stimulation of innovative mathematics, statistics, and related computational methods, by the modelling and analysis of such problems across engineering and the physical, biological and social sciences. The emphasis will be on case studies drawn from actual applications of mathematics to industrial problems. Huaxiong Huang, York University, Canada, and Chris J. Budd, University of Bath, UK, act as the journal’s editors-in-chief. They are supported by an internationally renowned editorial board.

Fields Mathematics Education Journal was first published in 2014. It has the aim of providing open access to the range of themes that attract the attention of the mathematics education community internationally. The journal’s editors-in-chief are Donna Kotsopoulos, Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada, and Dragana Martinovic, University of Windsor, Canada. They are also supported by an internationally renowned editorial board.

Walter Craig, Director, and Matheus Grasselli, Deputy Director of the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, said: “These two journals reflect the fact that both mathematics education and industrial mathematics have been core areas of strength at the Fields Institute for many years. We are also committed to continue to play a leadership role in the open access format, which we believe is the future of academic publishing, and are happy to extend our existing partnership with Springer into this domain.”

Elizabeth Loew, Executive Editor, Mathematics, Springer, said: “Springer is pleased to welcome the Fields Mathematics Education Journal and the Mathematics-in-Industry Case Studies Journal to SpringerOpen, expanding further our co-publishing relationship with the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences. These journals are guided by motivated editors-in-chief and editorial boards and we look forward to seeing the journals flourish in the next years.”
