Springer Nature forges strategic cooperation with three Chinese universities in support of China's “double world-class” program

Shanghai, 9 March 2017

Springer Nature has signed memorandums of understanding (MOU) on strategic cooperation with Shanghai Jiaotong University, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Beijing Union Medical College and Tsinghua University School of Medicine in Shanghai and Beijing this week. The signing of these MOUs is intended to assist the three universities in strengthening international cooperation and academic exchange, enhancing their capabilities in scientific research, and attracting international talent so that they can develop world-class majors and become the world-class universities.

In accordance with the MOUs, Springer Nature will hold Nature Conferences with the three universities to facilitate their communication and academic exchange with the international research community and increase the influence of their dominant disciplines globally. Springer Nature will cooperate with these universities in co-publishing journals and books to foster the dissemination of scientific research.  The organization will also provide Nature Masterclasses and other training courses to enable the universities’ teachers and researchers to better develop the skills needed to write research papers that can transform their scientific research into academic papers that can be published in high-impact journals.

On nature.com and other platforms, Springer Nature would help the universities grow in reputation and brand influence, flourish in international academic exchange and attract the world's top talent through a range of joint programs targeting scientific communication, international recruitment, brand promotion and other aspects.

Steven Inchcoombe, Chief Publishing Officer, Springer Nature said: "Springer Nature was formed two years ago as a result of strategic merger, which has brought together an array of brands including Nature, Springer and Scientific American. With a rich heritage of more than 100 years of experience in serving the research community, these brands have made it their consistent mission to ‘advance discovery’ through innovations.

“At present, China is looking at innovation as the main driving force for sustainable development. China's institutes of higher learning and research institutions are key elements of such a strategy and are playing a critical role in the process of innovation. We at Springer Nature are pleased to utilize our international network, platforms and resources, to publish high-quality research from China and additionally, offer services and products to support more of the Chinese universities and research institutions in acting as an active part of the international community, increasing their research efficiency, and developing into the world-class universities and institutions.”

Springer Nature and its subsidiaries had collaborated with the three universities previously in journal and book publishing, research training, academic conferences, database subscriptions and in some other fields. The signing of the MOUs will deepen mutual collaboration, set up an overall framework for further cooperation and provide a package of tailored services to accurately respond to the needs of the universities in fulfilling their strategic goals for university and discipline development.
