Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR)

CGIAR is a strategic alliance of countries, international and regional organizations and private foundations that was established in 1971 to disseminate the knowledge of agricultural science to benefit developing countries.

The CGIAR’s mission is to achieve sustainable food security and reduce poverty in developing countries through scientific research and research-related activities in the fields of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, policy, and environment.

Today, the CGIAR has 64 members worldwide that include 25 developing and 22 industrialized countries, 4 private foundations, and 13 regional and international organizations that provide financing, technical support, and strategic direction.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Bank serve as cosponsors.

The CGIAR’s Library and Information Services Consortium (CG-LISC) is a collaboration of CGIAR’s information managers and librarians driven by the constant change of information needs of end-users and developments in information and communication technology (ICT), accompanied by limited financial and human resources.
