Across the Springer Nature family of brands Editors-in-Chief work with internal editors to help develop and promote their journal and its content. Whether an internal editor is referred to as a journal development editor, publishing editor, or simply just an editor, the support they provide is instrumental in the journal’s development. We’ve outlined eight ways that internal editors work to ensure the growth of journals in their portfolios:

  1. Communicate with editors-in-chief, society contacts, editorial board members and any other journal stakeholders on all publishing matters, ensuring that any issues or questions related to the publishing process are addressed
  2. Work alongside journal editors and editorial board members to increase journal visibility and reputation within the field
  3. Flag improvements to journal processes when needed or required
  4. Increase journal citations compared to the competition through article inflow and marketing
  5. Work with internal and external editors to keep editorial boards engaged with journal content and informed of journal and publisher activities
  6. Ensure that any authors and reviewers who contact the journal receive appropriate support, ensuring that communications are responded to within a timely fashion and escalated to other departments when needed
  7. Work with marketing teams to ensure journals are appropriately represented in all relevant marketing campaigns and activities (e.g. conferences, e-mail campaigns, thematic campaigns, etc.)
  8. Ensure that the journal website is kept up-to-date with all relevant external information including contact and submission details, relevant calls for papers, etc.
