November 14th marks World Diabetes Day. This year, the International Diabetes Federation has chosen the theme of ‘Protect Your Family’. Globally, >425 million people have diabetes mellitus, a condition that can be expensive and challenging for the patient and their family.

Risk factors and related complications are only beginning to be understood as current treatments are extending the lives of patients for longer. Emerging complications can affect cognition, kidneys, feet, cardiovascular, reproductive and visual systems. Thus, both the illness and co-morbidities are significant burdens and impact negatively on patient lives and healthcare systems.”
