Springer Nature publishes UK-wide gender pay gap report

Springer Nature today published its first gender pay gap report covering all of its UK business.  While all UK businesses with more than 250 staff must report this data, Springer Nature has chosen to publish data for all four of its UK legal entities including those not yet covered by the Equality Act 2010 (Gender Pay Gap Information) Regulations 2017.

 

On 5 April 2017, the median gender pay gap between men and women working at Springer Nature in the UK was 15.12%, against a national median gap of 18.4%. The full gender pay gap report, which can be downloaded from Springer Nature’s website, contains additional information and commentary.

 

Springer Nature’s management board fully recognises diversity and inclusion as a fundamental pillar of its success as a global business and in 2017 initiated a global diversity and inclusion (D&I) strategy to focus activities in this important area.

 

Jessica Gedamu, Global Director of Diversity and Inclusion for Springer Nature commented: “Whilst we already have a diverse workforce, including many women in senior positions, the gender balance at Springer Nature decreases with seniority and the UK data further highlights the need for us to do more.  We are currently looking at how best to support both gender and cultural diverse groups of people in their career development. This includes working to overcome unconscious bias, offering opportunities for mentoring and professional development and focusing on the recruitment and promotion processes to increase diversity and the representation of women in our global decision-making bodies.”

 

In line with the global diversity and inclusion approach at Springer Nature, we will use the data from the UK gender pay gap report in combination with other data points, reflecting the global nature of our business, to help inform our diversity and inclusion strategies.

 

Springer Nature is pleased to confirm it supports the Publishers’ Association Inclusivity Action Plan and will be developing company-specific global diversity targets during 2018. In addition, Springer Nature is a founder member of the FT 125 Women’s Forum through which, each year, ten female mid-career professionals from Springer Nature are selected to attend a series of forum events designed to help to develop and retain future leaders. Those who attend are encouraged to bring back valuable insights to share with colleagues within the business. On 28th March, Springer Nature – which was created through merger in 2015 – will publish its first Responsible Business report. The report will include data about environmental and social impacts of the company as well as additional information on its global diversity and inclusion strategy.
