Springer Nature signs strategic cooperation MOU with Tongji University

Shanghai, 29 February 2016

Springer Nature has inked a Memorandum of Understanding for a Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement (“MOU”) with Tongji University (“Tongji”) in support of its vision to develop into “a sustainability-oriented, world-class university”. Leveraging its expertise, platforms and global networks, Springer Nature is set to help Tongji enhance its international reputation and influence through cooperation across a wide range of fields, including brand promotion, recruitment of overseas talent, co-publishing of journals and books, academic training and database services, among others.

Steven Inchcoombe, Managing Director and President of Nature Publishing Group (NPG) said at the signing ceremony: “We remain committed to the global scientific community with an expanded service offering. Beyond providing platforms for researchers to publish their research, we are building up their capabilities to discover and write, and we are helping universities and institutions engage more in international academic exchange so that they could have a stronger influence and become more competitive. The signing of the MOU is truly reflective of such a service philosophy.”

Gang Pei, President of Tongji University said: “The MOU marks a new milestone in years of cooperation between the two parties, paving the way for us to work together in a wider scope and on a higher level. Supported by Springer Nature’s networks and resources, we expect to build on our own strengths, share more of our high-quality research with the global scientific community and boost our international reputation. This will allow us to accelerate our pace of internationalization and develop into a world-class university.”

As part of the agreement, Springer Nature will showcase Tongji’s research successes via Nature and its website nature.com. NPG’s scientific jobs board will help to amass high-calibre overseas experts for Tongji, and Scientific American, a popular-science magazine, will provide another route to attract potential international students for the university.

Springer Nature and Tongji will co-host international conferences to facilitate the university’s international academic exchange and extend its influence in key subject areas. NPG will also hold Nature Masterclasses to help its faculty members and researchers learn how to turn high-quality research into high-quality papers.

Under the MOU, both sides will also continue to explore opportunities for publishing more Springer-branded books. Springer, part of Springer Nature, has published over 30 monographs and conference proceedings authored by Tongji’s researchers. In addition, following the agreement signed in May 2015 to co-publish npj Pollution Control, Springer Nature and Tongji will discuss the potential to publish additional journals.

The MOU was signed today by Gang Pei and Steven Inchcoombe in Shanghai.
