Advancing Discovery

Standing up for science, leading the way on open access and being powerful advocates for the highest quality and ethical standards in research.

Springer Nature advances discovery by publishing robust and insightful research, supporting the development of new areas of knowledge and making ideas and information accessible around the world.

Key to this is our ability to provide the best possible service to the whole research community: helping authors to share their discoveries; enabling researchers to find, access and understand the work of others; supporting librarians and institutions with innovations in technology and data; providing quality publishing support to societies; and championing the issues that matter – standing up for science, leading the way on open access and being powerful advocates for the highest quality and ethical standards in research.

As a research publisher, Springer Nature is home to trusted brands including Springer, Nature Research, BioMed Central, Palgrave Macmillan and Scientific American.

Improving the publishing process

As a global publisher, we can advance discovery by improving the integrity, user experience and speed of the publishing process. We will build new researcher-centric solutions that offer guidance and choice, and push for continuous improvements and innovation that adds the most value to the community.

In 2016 we launched a pilot for Nature Research Journal submissions aimed at providing a new and simpler experience for authors. The pilot led to significantly reduced submission times and in 2017 will be rolled out for many more journals. In 2017 we launched a new Journal Suggester tool on and, and later in the year plan to launch a unified Springer Nature Transfer Service to help authors find a home for all publishable research.

Innovating across science communications

As the rapid evolution of technology creates more channels for the dissemination and amplification of research, we see our role as connecting people with the most relevant and important information, so that more can be learned and more can be discovered. This includes finding new ways to curate and personalise content, bringing science to broader audiences in more engaging and accessible ways, and enabling the sharing of open access and subscription content.

Our new service, Recommended, connects the research community with the most relevant content by providing specific recommendations from across all published literature are generated by algorithm. Recommended makes suggestions of primary research papers which are drawn from over 65 million papers, are chosen irrespective of publisher, and are algorithmically tailored to the individual researchers’ interests. The service has been developed in response to the extensive and rapid increase in published research which makes it difficult for researchers to keep up to date with developments in their specific fields.

Driving the development of open research

As the leading open access publisher, we see the rise of open research in all its manifestations as one of the major forces reshaping the way that researchers communicate and collaborate to advance the pace and quality of discovery. We will continue to play a strong and progressive role in enabling the research community to take full advantage of all that open research offers.

We recently launched Springer Nature SciGraph – a new Linked Open Data (LOD) platform that aggregates data sources from Springer Nature and cooperating partners, making it easier to analyse information related to Springer Nature publications. Springer Nature SciGraph collates information from across the research landscape, such as funders, research projects and grants, conferences, affiliations, and publications. Currently the knowledge graph contains 155 million facts about objects of interest to the scholarly domain. The vast majority of these datasets will be freely accessible and provided in a way to enable experts to analyze downloaded datasets using their own machines, or via exploration tools on the Springer Nature SciGraph website.

Finding new ways to add value

We want to apply our skills and resources beyond publishing to better serve the needs of researchers. Our focus is on investing in and creating tools, services or training that help the research community to understand and utilise new ideas and concepts, as well as providing the metrics and information that can help librarians and institutions to more effectively utilise their limited budgets.

Nature Masterclasses provide tailored training for researchers so they can more effectively produce and publish their work. The training is delivered by Nature journal editors and aims to help institutions and laboratories support their researchers in writing research papers. Through face-to-face workshops, online training and webinars, participants can learn practical scientific writing techniques, develop writing skills and understand publishing processes and how the manuscript selection process works.
