New launches for 2019

_

Three new titles have joined the Nature Research portfolio: Nature Machine Intelligence, Nature Metabolism and Nature Reviews Physics. These new journals expand the portfolio to serve and respond to rapidly growing scientific communities, particularly in multidisciplinary research and research aimed at solving our most pressing societal challenges.

Below you will find more information about why these journals are launched, the in-house editorial team and why you should add these journals to your license. Substantial advances in AI

The past decade has seen substantial advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics, making an impact in all other scientific areas. With the fast pace of development and promise of potentially transformative applications, different disciplines have to come together to make the best use of these technologies in science, industry and society. Currently there is no high-profile journal dedicated to doing this.

Therefore, Nature Machine Intelligence will provide a unique platform for cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence and robotics as well as for expert discussions of the short and longer term implications.

Tracking influence and possibilities

AI and robotics technologies are currently influencing almost every area of science, industry and society and readers from various sectors want to stay informed of what is and isn’t possible with AI in their own field and wider areas.

Transforming the Health Sector and protecting ourselves

On the one hand, AI techniques will play a crucial role in transforming the health sector, which has far more data and patients than human doctors and other medical staff can handle. Worldwide medical diagnosis and patient care will be empowered by the availability of smart, wearable diagnostic devices, robot assistants and AI-enriched techniques for processing data.

The other side of the acceleration in AI developments is the potential for dangerous implications, especially in the areas of autonomous weapons, data misuse and cyber security.  The journal will provide a platform for experts, social scientists and policy makers to discuss measures needed to address these issues.

Strong growth in metabolic research

Metabolism research has experienced strong growth over the past decade as we learn how metabolic pathways influence diseases with huge societal impact, such as obesity and diabetes. The scientific community has long asked for another high-quality journal dedicated to this field and we answer this call now with the launch of Nature Metabolism, which will be essential reading for researchers working in any area of metabolic research.

Essential reading for fundamental and translational research

Metabolism research is booming and has led to breakthroughs in many areas, from fundamental cell biology to biomedical and translational research on diseases with huge societal impact, such as obesity, diabetes, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Creating a sense of community and fostering the cross-pollination of ideas between disciplines, Nature Metabolism will be essential reading for researchers working in any area of metabolic research.

"Good Health & Well-Being"

As a journal covering fundamental advances in the life sciences and in biomedical/translational research, the journal contributes to working towards the sustainable development goal #3 of “Good Health and Well-being”.

20,000 papers in physics each year

With close to 20,000 papers published in physics each year, it is more important than ever to publish high-quality reviews summarizing the progress in emerging fields. These are useful both for experienced researchers willing to explore new areas to get fresh inspiration for their research and for young scientists getting started in a field. Moreover, well-curated technical information is difficult to find, and Nature Reviews Physics will provide it in a short and accessible format.

Stimulating interdisciplinary collaborations

High-quality reviews have a very important role in getting young scientists started in a field and in stimulating interdisciplinary collaborations. We are seeing a lot of interest at conferences for the new article types Nature Reviews Physics will publish, and we believe researchers at your institution will want to have access to this content when it will be published.

Climate change & clean energy

Physics can have a very important role in addressing grand challenges such as climate change and the generation of affordable and clean energy. Nature Reviews Physics will dedicate space to highlight this type of research. Moreover, one of the goals of the journal is to help to overcome barriers between disciplines, both within physics and with other fields, such as biology. We will address this goal by publishing accessible interdisciplinary reviews to facilitate the dialogue between different communities.

High quality journals due to unique in-house editorial team

Due to the time needed to evaluate each manuscript, commission reviews and provide excellent author service, all Nature Research journals have professional in-house editorial teams which are entirely independent. The editors are all trained scientists, completely dedicated to championing and representing their field within the journal they work for. They retain close ties to the community, staying in touch with researchers, prioritizing time out in the field and focusing on the significance of the research.
