New open access journal npj Climate and Atmospheric Science announced by Springer Nature and King Abdulaziz University

npj Climate and Atmospheric Science launches today to provide researchers, policy makers and the public with up-to-date, freely accessible research on weather and climate, atmospheric chemistry and air pollution, and the atmospheric system and its links to the oceans, the terrestrial biosphere and the hydrological cycle.

The new open-access, interdisciplinary journal — now open for submissions — will be published by Springer Nature in partnership with the Center of Excellence for Climate Change Research at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Magdalena Skipper, Executive Editor of Nature Partner Journals at Springer Nature said: “npj Climate and Atmospheric Science will cover many areas of significant public interest, with a breadth of subject areas that complement, rather than duplicate, existing journals. These subject areas are currently not well covered by open access journals, and we feel they will benefit greatly from maximum accessibility.”

The journal will feature joint Editors-in-Chief: Prof. Roy Harrison from the University of Birmingham, UK, and Dr. Fred Kucharski from the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Italy.

Prof. Roy Harrison said: “The journal will cover several subject areas that are both of very wide public interest and also currently extremely active areas of research, from local air pollution phenomena and their causes, extreme weather events —such as floods and droughts — and their prediction, and the causes and effects of climate change.”

Dr. Fred Kucharski said: “Climate variability is a subject that affects the life of everybody every day. A relevant example is the current El Nino Southern Oscillation event, which caused numerous climatic anomalies this winter and will likely continue to do this spring and summer. We anticipate it will be the focus of much future research, as the prediction of its effects has proved surprisingly difficult.”

Prof. Mansour Almazroui, Director of the Center of Excellence for Climate Change Research at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, said: “There is, without a doubt, a clear need for a high impact open access journal that focusses on identifying and reporting the most important and significant climate and atmospheric science. As a unique research institute in the Arab world and the Middle East, conducting not only research in the field of weather and climate but also building capacity in climate modelling, we are very excited to partner with Springer Nature to publish these advances.”

The journal is open for submissions focussing on topics including climate dynamics, climate variability, weather and climate prediction, climate change, weather extremes, atmospheric composition including aerosols, air pollution, the hydrological cycle and atmosphere-ocean interactions. It will also cover methods including climate and chemistry-transport modelling, in situ observations, and remote sensing, and submissions are invited in the form of research articles, brief communications, reviews and data-focused resource papers. Novel studies with regional and/or global focus will also be considered.

Each original research article will include a lay summary that will summarize the key issues with the goal of maximising the impact and reach of the research findings.

About the Center of Excellence for Climate Change Research

The Center of Excellence for Climate Change Research (CECCR) was established in March 2010 in King Abdulaziz University (KAU), with a mandate to carry out state-of-the-art research in the field of weather, climate and climate change. The CECCR specializes in studies of several aspects of weather and climate, using a large range of numerical models to perform weather and climate simulations and predictions, ranging from regional to global scales.

The Center utilizes the KAU "Aziz" Supercomputer, which has 12,000 CPUs and 7.5 PB storage capacity, to perform its weather and climate simulations. Besides this, the Center is developing a detailed climate database that can be used to perform application-oriented studies. The CECCR also provides technical support and scientific consultations to decision makers in the governmental and non-governmental sectors to enhance their adaptability and resilience against adverse impacts of weather extremes and climate change. Moreover, the Center aims to nurture a group of researchers capable of addressing the scientific challenges posed by the sensitivity of an arid climate.
