The Editor-in-Chief of the new open access journal Carbon Research gives some insight into his research focus, talks about the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and expands on the scope of the new journal.
My research mainly focuses on three aspects: biogeochemical processes and effects of natural organic matter (NOM), lake pollution control engineering, and water quality criteria (WQC) and standards.
Over the years, I have devoted myself to investigations on biogeochemical dynamics and ecological effects of NOM, exploring the migration and transformation of nitrogen, phosphorus, and heavy metals at the sediment/water interface of lakes, and revealing their underlying mechanisms. Based on these understandings, we have carried out a large number of environmental engineering projects on mitigation treatment and ecological restoration of polluted sediments of more than 20 basins/lakes in China and all over the world.
My research on engineering application of theory and technology for pollution control focuses on solving the problem of eutrophication in lakes. We have developed a number of innovative technologies. I am also dedicated to the study of water quality criteria (WQC) and standards. We have established series of new theories, models and technologies for scientific derivation of WQC, determined the ecotoxicity of heavy metals such as Zn, Ni, and Cu, revealed the influence of environmental factors (e.g., organic matter and water hardness, etc.) on chemical toxicity and their underlying mechanisms, and constructed a bioligand model to break through the theoretical bottleneck of criteria calibration under different environmental conditions.
I will continue devoting myself to fundamental research on NOM, lake eutrophication, pollution control, carbon emissions, and WQC to support environmental management. I aim to improve the understanding of important scientific issues, solve key technical bottleneck problems, pay attention to the applicability of research to major environmental problems, strengthen the integration of technological innovation and industrial application, and carry out the transfer of the advanced science and technology to solve real world problems.
In the field of ecological and environmental protection, the future research areas for development include the control theory and technology of lake eutrophication, ecological evaluation of aquatic ecosystems and their ecological restoration, WQC associated with human health, carbon footprint accounting, and regional low-carbon development, which are also my long-term research goals. Besides, we will carry out research on the synergetic development of reducing pollution and carbon emissions, focusing on challenges of achieving the carbon neutrality goal in China by 2060. We will explore and solve key technical problems in lowering pollutant emissions and coping with global climate change, and provide technical support for achieving “Habitable Earth” in the future.
SDG13: Climate Action calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, and SDG7: Affordable and Clean Energy sets an objective to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. I believe these two goals are interrelated and both are covered in the journal of Carbon Research, as low-carbon development plays an essential role in tackling climate change and achieving sustainable energy development.
Carbon Research is an international, multi-disciplinary journal focusing on the theoretical and technological innovations related to carbon in the “Carbon Age” with a particular focus on the following four areas: 1) development and application of carbon-based materials for sustainability, 2) key biogeochemical processes of carbon and the global carbon cycle, 3) green energy and sustainable development, and 4) realization and path to carbon neutrality.
By launching this new open access journal Carbon Research, we encourage scientific innovation in carbon research and aim for creating an international platform for multi-disciplinary scientists including social scientists and engineers, policymakers, as well as businessmen to communicate frontier research on the aforementioned research areas, and offer solutions to achieve the ultimate goal of reducing carbon emission and combating climate change.
As a comprehensive journal, Carbon Research publishes various types of articles focused on the theme of carbon, and each paper is expected to include a discussion of its contribution towards SDG13 or SDG7. In this way, we will be able to analyze from time to time if we are getting closer to the ultimate goal of reducing carbon emission and how far we are from achieving the carbon neutrality goals.
Carbon Research will concentrate on achievements in multiple aspects such as in-depth concepts, innovative theories, and research and development of technologies related to the theme of carbon for sustainability in the "Carbon Age". It will promote theoretical innovation and industrial development through interdisciplinary research, and lead to new trends and a paradigm shift in carbon research and technology adoption through international cooperation.
In the longer term, the goal of Carbon Research is to focus on theoretical advances, technological breakthroughs, novel product innovations, and formulation of policies and regulations in controlling carbon emission, which will trigger multi-directional driving forces for socioeconomic development, lay the foundation for sustainable development, and assure the realization of carbon neutrality.
Dr. Fengchang Wu is the director of State Key Laboratory of Environmental Criteria and Risk Assessment, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES). His research interests mainly cover environmental toxicology and chemistry by multi-disciplinary approaches including environmental biogeochemistry, chemistry, toxicology, and risk assessment. He has made remarkable contributions to the protection of the aquatic ecosystem in China through his advancement of environmental science, standards, technologies, and engineering. Dr. Wu was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2017 in recognition of his work in the development of the environmental criteria/standards system in China.
