Authorship Changes

At times, authors may request changes to the author list on a submitted or accepted manuscript. This can range from changes to the order of authors or their roles, to addition or removal of authors. Editors need to be able to manage these requests correctly and assess the reasons given in order to ensure problematic requests are not allowed to proceed and thus protect the scholarly record.

About this course

This course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to confidently manage requests to change, add or remove authors on submitted manuscripts. This includes ensuring authors adhere to the correct process for requesting such changes, assessing the reasons given for the changes and feeling confident in deciding whether to allow the request or not.

This course is written for both new and experienced editors who handle manuscripts and may need to manage requests from authors to change the authorship of a manuscript at any point in the submission process. It is relevant across all fields and disciplines and for all different journal structures and publishing approaches.

This single-module course has individual sections explaining what constitutes authorship and Springer Nature polices in this area, acceptable and unacceptable reasons for changing author lists, the process authors should follow when requesting any changes, and what to do if after assessing a request there appear to be problems. It includes practical examples and interactive knowledge checks.
