In this issue, Dr. Shin'ichi Koizumi, Senior Editor for Materials & Chemistry talks to us about the book he is most proud to have published in 2020 and what makes the book stand out.

Which book are you most proud to have published in 2020?

I’m proud to have published: “Theoretical Chemistry for Experimental Chemists: Pragmatics and Fundamentals” because it made my wish come true. When I studied experimental chemistry a long time ago, it was already important for experimental chemists to understand theoretical chemistry well, because it was necessary to support our experimental data. However, as many experimental chemists are not good at theoretical chemistry, it was really tough for them (including me, especially!) to struggle with so many complicated formulas in books written by theoretical chemists.

Today the importance of theoretical chemistry has increased much since then: it can even show/predict what experimental chemists should do from now on.


Why is this your personal 2020 highlight?

Since I became a publishing editor, I have hoped we could publish a book which briefly introduces essence of theoretical chemistry and explains what it can do for experimental chemists with as little formulas as possible, but it was difficult to find its appropriate potential author who deeply understands both experimental and theoretical chemistries. Several years ago, however, I finally found Prof. Kazuyoshi Tanaka, who is one of authorities of chemistry in Japan. He wrote the book putting a lot of effort trying to use figures instead of formulas, and this year it was successfully published. I hope this very useful book will be found and read by many experimental chemists and students.

About the author

Kazuyoshi Tanaka

Kazuyoshi Tanaka was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1950 and received a degree of Dr. of Engineering from Kyoto University in 1978 under guidance of Professor Kenichi Fukui (the first Asian Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in 1981). Tanaka is majoring in physical chemistry, quantum chemistry, and materials chemistry. It is worthwhile mentioning that he is a theoretical chemist and at the same time an experimental chemist. He is now an Emeritus Professor of Kyoto University after undertaking Professorship there during 1996-2015.
