When we launched the combined Earth and Environmental Science eBook package, with just 163 titles for the first time in 2005, we had no idea that it would develop and become as successful as it is today. This year’s collection encompasses 560 thematic titles spanning geological sciences, geography, environmental earth sciences, environmental engineering methods and social implications of environmental issues and climate change, presenting the whole range of disciplines involved in the field of environmental research.

The collection also mirrors the growing importance of sustainability research and development within the interdisciplinary environmental science research community: Sustainable development has been defined in many ways. The most cited definition is from the so called Brundtland Report, “Our Common Future” (1987): “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. 28 years later, in 2015, the world leaders adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals at an historic UN Summit and the follow year, launched the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.

We at Springer Nature are very proud to present our contribution to international sustainability research and development with not only a growing number of monographs and series dedicated to this important topic, but also two landmark publications - namely the Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainability Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals Series. There have been no other comprehensive publications addressing all of the SDGs in such an integrated way before. Contributions come from scientists, policy makers and researchers working in all fields related to the SDGs.

With our growing textbook-program in Earth and Environmental Sciences we address the need of providing a wide range of literature that supports students at all grades.

The highlighted titles below reflect the variety and actuality of the Springer Nature Earth and Environmental Science program.
