Transformative agreement for CAPES

Information for authors

As a corresponding author affiliated with a participating institution within Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES, you can now publish your article open access (OA) in Springer titles selection with fees covered.

CAPES and Springer Nature have signed a three-year transformative agreement, valid from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028, enabling Brazilian corresponding authors* from participating institutions to publish OA with the article processing charge (APC) costs covered in more than 1,730 eligible hybrid journals under the Springer and Academic Journals** imprints. In addition, all users from participating institutions can enjoy full access to read more than 1,770 journals on the Springer Nature Link platform and Academic Journals on the Nature.com platform.

What the agreement covers

  • APC costs are fully covered for peer-reviewed articles accepted for publication in eligible hybrid journals under the Springer and Academic Journals imprints, provided that the corresponding author is affiliated with a CAPES participating institution.
  • To be eligible for APC coverage under the agreement, the article must be accepted for publishing between January 1, 2026 until December 31, 2028.
  • Additional costs from editorial services requested by the author, such as excess pages, color figures, or supplementary materials could be charged by the journals. Those costs are not covered by the agreement and remain the responsibility of the authors.
  • All users of CAPES participating institutions have full access to read more than 1,700 Springer journals and Academic Journals on SpringerLink.com and Nature.com.

The author must agree to a Creative Commons CC BY license on behalf of all co-authors, as established by CAPES Ordinance No. 120/2024. Copyright of the article remains with the authors.

OA selection

For articles eligible under the agreement, the corresponding author will receive confirmation that their APC costs may be covered by CAPES and must choose to publish the article in open access.

Validation

If your article is eligible and meets all compliance requirements, CAPES will complete the approval process for APC cost coverage.

Publication

The article becomes available for anyone worldwide to read, share, and reuse.

CAPES compliance

CAPES Ordinance No. 120/2024 establishes the guidelines for APC payments in open access publications, including the mandatory use of the Creative Commons CC BY license and the requirement that the corresponding author have a unique ORCID iD linked to Meus Dados CAPES. For the article to be covered under this agreement, please ensure that you select the CC BY license and register a valid ORCID as the corresponding author.

FAQs

Who is considered the corresponding author?

The corresponding author is defined as the person who handles the manuscript and correspondence during the publication process – from manuscript correction and proof reading, to handling the revisions and re-submission of revised manuscripts up to the acceptance of the manuscripts. 

The corresponding author has the authority to act on behalf of all co-authors in all matters pertaining to publication of the manuscript including supplementary material. They are also responsible for obtaining such agreements and for informing the co-authors of the manuscript’s status throughout the submission, review and publication process.

How can I make sure my article is eligible?

There are three ways we can recognise your eligibility for open access publication through this agreement.

Please ensure that the corresponding author meets the requirements of CAPES Ordinance No. 120/2024, including having a unique ORCID iD linked to Meus Dados CAPES and recorded in the article submission, which is a necessary condition for CAPES to authorize APC payment.

Upon acceptance of your article, you'll also be prompted to provide your institutional affiliation. If you are eligible, CAPES will complete the approval process without causing any delays to the manuscript publication process. Please check additional requirements from CAPES.

How do I know if my article has been approved?

The CAPES approval team will assess your article’s eligibility based on your institutional affiliation, the article type, the journal title, and the corresponding author’s ORCID iD registered in Meus Dados CAPES.

Once your article is approved by CAPES, you will be notified by email, and your article will proceed to publication.

What if I'm not covered by the agreement?

There are still plenty of ways to find funding for your article processing charge (APC). Visit our open access funding page to check whether your institution or research funder makes OA funding available.

Which article types are covered by this agreement?

  • Original Paper: Standard article, usually presenting new results; articles published under this article type may also be referred to as Original Research, Original Article, Original Paper or Research Paper.
  • Review Paper: Standard article, interpreting previously published results.
  • Brief Communication: Short article submitted for rapid publication that exhibits the same structure as a standard article.
  • Continuing Education: Article forming integral part of further education (usually medical).
