Webinars & Podcasts

A series of live and recorded educational, online talks and interviews, designed for librarians. We aim to help librarians and informational professionals gain insight into emerging new information technologies and expert opinion from their peers and publishers on some of the most pressing and relevant issues faced by librarians today.

Webinars: often hosted in collaboration with organizational partners and the broader community, our webinars are free to attend and include lively Q&As at the end of each session - all you need is an internet connection and access to a telephone or computer headset.

Podcasts: Explore our growing series of educational and collaborative podcast, including tutorials and interviews designed to keep you up to date on news, trends and developments in publishing and technology, as they happen.

The AI Revolution in Cancer Research

About the webinar

Join us for a webinar on the AI revolution in Cancer featuring Nature Cancer authors and editor. The current approaches to cancer diagnosis—histological assessment and sequencing—are time consuming and costly. Moreover, they often produce results which are inconsistent across institutions. The introduction of big data and artificial intelligence helps to improve the accuracy of cancer diagnosis. In a recent collection titled Cancer Milestones, the use of AI in cancer diagnosis was identified as a milestone in cancer research. This webinar offers an opportunity to explore the topic with Dr. Jakob Nikolas Kather from RWTH Aachen University, Dr. Moritz Gerstung from European Molecular Biology Laboratory-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), and Dr. Miguel Foronda, Associate Editor of Nature Cancer.

Jakob Nikolas Kather

Guest speaker: Jakob Nikolas Kather, MD, MSc

Jakob is a physician/scientist and assistant professor at RWTH Aachen University (Germany) with additional affiliations at the NCT Heidelberg (Germany) and the University of Leeds (UK). His research is focused on applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in cancer, in particular on predictive biomarkers for targeted treatment and immunotherapy. His clinical duties include Gastrointestinal Oncology, Gastroenterology and Medical Intensive Care.

Moritz Gerstung

Guest speaker: Moritz Gerstung, PhD

Moritz Gerstung leads a research group at EMBL-EBI investigating the underlying mechanisms of cancer development and seeking to understand the differences in therapy success and outcomes in different individuals. His team develops statistical models for relating different layers of genomic, molecular and clinical data to establish connections between genotype and phenotype, and tools to predict outcomes based on comprehensive, high-dimensional datasets. The group also explores the evolutionary dynamics of cancer. He has a PhD in Computational Biology from ETH Zurich (2012) and carried our postdoctoral work at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (2012-2015). Moritz joined EMBL-EBI as a Research group leader in August 2015. In January 2021 Moritz started to lead a new division for AI in oncology at the German Cancer Research Centre (dkfz).

Miguel Foronda

Host: Miguel Foronda, PhD

Miguel completed his PhD at CNIO (Madrid, Spain) studying telomere and stem cell biology in the context of cancer and aging. He obtained an EMBO/Marie-Curie fellowship at the University of Edinburgh to investigate the enhancer-mediated regulation of cell identity and did postdoctoral work on modelling complex cancer genotypes with CRISPR and base editing and exploring novel cancer therapies at Weill Cornell School of Medicine (New York, USA). In 2018 he also contributed to the establishment of the Spanish Parliamentary Office of science advisory body. Miguel joined Nature Cancer in 2019 and is based in the New York office.
